Food code

FOOD CODE Is set of images taken over time from a colour coded excel sheet.

Food code creates a pattern on an excel sheet that uses a traffic light system for noting what food is tolerated and ‘safe’ and which could contribute to anaphylactic shock. Asphyxia can be caused by obstruction of breathing passageways from swelling of the throat due to an allergic reaction.

The excel sheet lists each food in a column. Each food crosses several columns providing information on reactions, blood tests, and food compounds, including histamine, salicylates, oxalates, nickel, sulphites, etc as well as symptoms and reactions and allergy tests .

The excel sheet creates a banal pattern without any visible data, while kitchen towels are reminiscent of bandages or hospital cloths. Food code is a systematic way to manage the complexities of extreme food allergies and intolerances.

The excel sheet pattern also points to the banal, domesticity of food production and healthcare systems that are either failing to feed so many or failing to keep us safe and healthy.
