Sitting in meetings, couldn’t help wondering –what we are here for? To shift more stuff, with the communications plasters of premium design and graphical brand concepts? Or can we consultants learn to apply design & management processes so that companies can leapfrog to newer business models that are more innovative by nature? Looking out the hotel window over a view of Shanghai Gotham City, it’s easy to forget at what cost this incredible view comes. And what will our skylines be like in 2050, 3050?
One company we met in China suggested a 3-year plan framework for collaboration. A fantastic initiative. Within that process with still keep 2020 in mind: what we see as the second wave of change imposed by changing legislation and logistical costs. A clear 2020 Vision can guide a company to increased business and lead to a new type of cyclical business model in the future. It’s possible- with a great deal of planning and strategic creativity. The third wave could be defined as 2050: to move beyond zero waste to positive environmental and social impact – and make business out of it. We would even like to find ways to compliment the power of money through the creation of parallel currencies of exchange, that can include a much broader, digitally empowered population. Taking this rear-view mirror approach to the 3 year framework, we can build parallel track strategies for consolidating, acting and developing business across R&D, product and service development and communications. And this is what companies in China really seem to get. They know what they are good at – and what they need to build their future brand.
